The D-Backs Legends Race is an in-game tradition known to even the most casual fan. In the fifth inning of every home game, fans first spot the big giant heads of Luis Gonzalez, Randy Johnson, Mark Grace and Matt Williams bobbling along the fence, preparing for a foot race to home plate. Fans may not know who will win, but they sure know who will lose every time – Grace. The team hosted tryouts at Chase Field Saturday to find the next group to fill the legends shoes (well, heads actually).
Once all the waivers are signed and niceties are exchanged, a team employee shows the guys how to put on the suit.
One by one, the hopefuls ran down the line and performed a victory dance for their fellow contestants and a panel of judges. The only rule: Don’t even think about stepping on the brand new grass.
Next they all ran together, this time trying to impress the judges with their race choreography.
And finally, the interview portion. Contestants stood on top of the dugout in groups of four and answered a series of personality questions, such as, “What would you do with your last day on earth?” And, “If you could be any animal, what would you be?”
